Why the number is confusing

One update can involve three different sizes.

Download size

The data arriving from the internet. This is the number stores and patch notes are most likely to show.

Installed size

The files that remain after the update is unpacked and old files are replaced. It can be smaller or larger than the download.

Temporary working room

Extra space the console may use while it verifies, copies, rebuilds, or replaces game files. That space is released when installation finishes.

Xbox and PS5 update-space behavior

Xbox Series X|S

Use the console’s shortfall when it gives you one.

An Xbox patch size proves whether the download can fit, but it does not reveal one universal installation multiplier. If Xbox names an additional amount, that console-generated number is the best minimum to use.

PlayStation 5

Sony gives us a cautious planning rule.

Sony says installation may require approximately twice the required free space. Because Sony does not define that phrase as two times the patch size, this check does not manufacture a multiplier from it.

Why games and updates keep getting bigger

The patch is not always a neat pile of new files.

Modern games contain large textures, audio, maps, modes, and shared content packs. Update systems compare old and new builds, but a small change inside a large packed file can still force a much larger replacement unless the game was packaged for efficient patching.
