Before you buy storage
Make room with the storage you already have.
Start with the cleanup controls built into your console. They show the real space you can reclaim, so you can stop if it is enough or shop with an accurate number.
Solving one failed game update? Check the update’s shortfall before deleting anything.
There is no honest universal savings estimate. Your installed games and files decide the result, and your console will show the exact amount before you remove anything.
On Xbox, start with Free up space.
This is the useful first move because Xbox builds the cleanup list for your actual console.
Unused add-ons
Remove leftover add-ons for games or editions you no longer use. Review the list before confirming.
Shrinkable games
Some games include files your Xbox model does not need. If this list is empty, there is nothing to shrink.
Duplicate copies
Keep the copy on the storage you actually use and remove the duplicate from the other drive.
Games you cannot access
Only remove one if you are finished with it. Deleting the install does not cancel a license you still own.
Write down the new free-space number. If it covers the next game plus update room, stop. You do not need another drive yet.
On PS5, check what is using the space.
PS5 separates games, captures, saved data, and system storage. Start with the largest removable category.
Frees space now
Remove game parts you do not use
Open Games and Apps. If a game shows Customize, remove an unused add-on, language, or finished part. Not every game supports this.
Frees space now
Save wanted captures, then clear the copies on PS5
Media Gallery can select several screenshots or clips at once. Copy anything you want to keep to USB before deleting it from the console.
Slows future growth
Change automatic trophy captures only if you do not want them
Trophy screenshots, trophy videos, and video duration are under Captures and Broadcasts. This does not clear old captures by itself.
Check Console Storage again after cleanup. That new available-space number is the one to use when planning your next install.
What not to delete for a quick fix
- Do not factory-reset a working console just to solve an ordinary storage shortage.
- Do not delete save data as a storage strategy. Saves are small compared with modern games and may contain progress that has not synced.
- Do not treat PS5 Other or system-reserved space like an ordinary folder. Use Sony's supported game, app, and media controls instead.
Use the number your console shows now
Still short? Find the smallest sensible fix.
Storage Check counts your console's usable space and the games in your storage plan. It can recommend playable expansion, cheaper USB library storage, or no purchase.
