PS5 external drive check

What should your PS5 external hard drive do?

Choose the job before the drive. A USB drive can store PS5 games and play PS4 games, but playable PS5 expansion requires an internal M.2 SSD. If something is failing, check the free path before replacing anything.

If the PS5 does not see the drive

  1. Connect the drive directly to the console, not through a USB hub.
  2. Try a SuperSpeed USB Type-C or Type-A port on the console.
  3. Disconnect any second drive that is already being used as USB extended storage.
  4. Confirm the drive is 250GB to 8TB and supports SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster.

Sony does not guarantee every USB device will work. Its current USB extended-storage guide lists the exact port, speed and capacity rules.

If PS5 asks to format the drive

Formatting as USB extended storage erases everything already on the drive, and Sony says that erased data cannot be recovered. Stop before formatting if the drive contains the only copy of personal files or a prior console backup.

If it is a new empty drive, go to Settings, Storage, USB Extended Storage, then Format as USB Extended Storage. Do not turn off the console or disconnect the drive during the format.

If the drive appears but a PS5 game will not launch

From Game Library, open the Installed tab and find the game on USB extended storage. Press the options button, choose Copy, and send it to console storage. If you have an internal M.2 SSD, that also counts as directly playable PS5 storage.

If transfers are becoming a regular annoyance, compare PS5 M.2 storage that plays games directly. If you prefer the lower-cost local library, compare USB library drives.

If the drive failed, are your saves safe?

PS5 saved data is not stored in USB extended game storage. It remains in console storage and can be copied to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. A separate full-console backup can include saved data, but Sony requires a FAT32 or exFAT drive, not a drive formatted as USB extended game storage.

A failed game drive may mean downloading or copying the games again. It does not, by itself, mean that your save progress was on that drive. See our console and drive recovery guide before you reset or format anything.

Safely disconnect the drive

If the PS5 is on, go to Settings, Storage, USB Extended Storage, then Safely Remove from PS5 before unplugging it. Improper disconnection can cause data loss, corruption, or damage to the console or drive.
