If your Xbox or PS5 breaks, are your games and saves safe?
Your purchases are usually safer than your save progress. Digital games stay tied to the account that bought them, and installed game files can usually be downloaded again. A save is recoverable only if it reached the platform cloud, another console, or a backup before the hardware failed.
The answer in one table
| What you care about | Usually recoverable? | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchases | Yes | Sign in to the account that bought them. |
| Disc games | Yes | You still need the disc and a console with a compatible drive. |
| Installed game files | Yes | Download again, reinstall from disc, or reconnect a working external drive. |
| Xbox save progress | Usually | The save must have synced while you were signed in and online. |
| PS5 save progress | Sometimes | You need a prior PlayStation Plus cloud copy or console backup. |
| Screenshots and clips | Not always | Local captures need their own prior copy or eligible app upload. |
If the Xbox stopped working
Sign in to the replacement Xbox with the same Microsoft account. Owned digital games should appear in your library. Install the game, launch it while connected to the Xbox network, and let the console finish syncing before you choose between any conflicting save versions.
Xbox requires supported game progress to roam when the player is signed in. The remaining risk is recent offline progress that never synced, an account you cannot recover, or a game that keeps progress on its own publisher service. Xbox explains the normal behavior in its cloud saved games FAQ.
If the PS5 stopped working
Sign in to the same PlayStation account on the replacement console. Digital purchases can be downloaded from Game Library. For saves, go to Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then check Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
PS5 cloud saves require PlayStation Plus and a copy that was uploaded before the failure. If no cloud copy or prior console backup exists and the old console cannot turn on, there may be no supported way to retrieve a save stored only on that console. Sony’s current cloud-storage instructions explain how to check and enable automatic sync.
If the external drive failed or was reformatted
On Xbox and PS5, an external game drive mainly holds installation files. Losing that copy does not remove a digital purchase from your account. Xbox save progress normally syncs separately. PS5 saved data is not stored in USB extended game storage at all.
A separate PS5 full-console backup is different. Sony allows saved data in a backup made to a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, but that drive is not the same format as USB extended game storage. If the failed drive held personal files or a console backup, do not format it just to make the console recognize it.
If you only lost replaceable game installations and want another local library, compare USB library drives. For games you want to launch directly, use Xbox playable storage or PS5 M.2 storage instead.
If the console still turns on, do this before repair
- Connect it to the internet and open the games whose recent progress matters most.
- On PS5, check the cloud sync status for those games or make a full console backup.
- Record the account email, recovery methods, console serial number, and any repair case number.
- Safely remove external storage before shipping or resetting the console.
- Assume a repair may erase or replace the console. Do not rely on the repair keeping local data.
What not to do
- Do not format a drive that may contain the only copy of something irreplaceable.
- Do not delete a cloud save to make a sync warning disappear.
- Do not assume an external game drive is also backing up PS5 saves.
- Do not buy replacement storage as a data-recovery method. It cannot restore a save that was never copied.
