GTA VI · USB storage
Can GTA VI play from an external hard drive?
No, not directly.
A USB drive can store GTA VI, but the game must be moved back before it can launch.
Rockstar is releasing GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Current-generation games on both consoles need internal storage or the console's supported playable expansion. A USB hard drive or USB SSD is library storage, not playable GTA VI storage.
What works on each console
Xbox Series X|S
- Plays the game
- Internal storage or an Xbox storage expansion card
- USB drive
- Stores the game for transfer. It does not launch the game.
PlayStation 5
- Plays the game
- Console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD
- USB drive
- Stores the game for transfer. It does not launch the game.
A USB drive can still be useful
It can keep a large local library without another full download. When you want a stored current-generation game, move it to playable storage first. This costs less per terabyte, but it adds a wait before play.
If you want GTA VI ready whenever you select it, buy playable storage. If you mainly want to avoid redownloading games, USB library storage may be the better value.
Choose by what you want the drive to do
The GTA VI install size is still unpublished. This page answers drive behavior, not how much capacity the game will need.
