Can your Xbox disc become digital?
Tell us what happened. We will check the preview, the disc, and the game, then show what to try next without relying on an unofficial compatibility list.
Is there an Xbox disc-to-digital game list?
No complete official list exists today. Xbox says the preview starts with thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games work, but not every title is included and support can change.
Community lists can help you decide what to test first, but they cannot confirm your edition, region, disc, or console rollout. Use the check above for the right console steps, then treat a successful claim on your Xbox as the answer for the disc you own.
What Xbox has confirmed
Preview began
August 31, 2026The feature is currently an Xbox Insider preview.
Claiming console
Xbox One or Series XThe console must have a working disc drive.
Supported disc era
Xbox One and Series XOriginal Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not supported.
Keep the disc
The license stays associatedAccess may be limited or revoked if you no longer possess it.
Xbox describes the feature in its official disc-to-digital announcement. Its current licensing FAQ explains the claim steps, supported disc generations, and why you need to keep the qualifying disc.
How does Xbox check that you still own the disc?
Downloading the game is not the ownership check. Microsoft says inserting a supported disc and successfully claiming it grants a limited digital license. That license remains conditioned on keeping the qualifying disc, and Microsoft may require another eligibility check later.
Microsoft has not publicly explained whether the preview identifies an individual copy, a manufacturing batch, or another signal on the disc. Its published digital-goods rules confirm what can happen: access may be suspended or revoked if the user no longer possesses the qualifying disc. We will not present an unconfirmed technical mechanism as fact.
Why PC, handheld, and cloud are separate
A successful disc claim creates digital Xbox access. It does not make every game playable everywhere. Windows PC and compatible handheld access require the version added to your account to support Xbox Play Anywhere. Cloud access also depends on the current cloud catalog.
| Where you want to play | What else must be true |
|---|---|
| Xbox console or Series S | Use the account that received the entitlement |
| Windows PC or handheld | The version added to your account supports Xbox Play Anywhere |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | The title is in the current cloud catalog and account requirements are met |
Use the official Xbox Play Anywhere catalog for PC and handheld capability. Do not infer it from the disc-to-digital result alone.
After the claim, check the storage decision
Claiming a game does not install it. If you plan to bring several discs into the digital library, total the games you actually want installed together and compare them with the free space your Xbox shows now.
The storage planner recommends playable expansion only after your selected library proves a shortfall. It can also recommend deleting, moving, or keeping the setup you already have.
Plan my claimed game libraryWhat Expansion Bay will not guess
We do not treat an unofficial list as a guarantee for every edition, region, or pressing. We also do not assume a missing claim means a publisher permanently excluded the game. The preview, console build, disc recognition, title, and edition can all change the observed result.
